…What y’all gonna do, PUBLIC ENEMY – Grid feat. Cypress Hill / George Clinton
Public Enemy – What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? is available at Apple Music.

Not to age me too accurately, but when I was in my university years, the post-post-punk years, all the righteous stereos were kicking out jams from legends in the making House of Pain, Cypress Hill, and Public Enemy. You may also remember that in that era funk master-in-chief George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic was experiencing a resurgence. So, this is now and in a year of pandemic, social unrest, and political chaos, it’s pretty damn cool that PE has returned, better than ever with a new track that speaks directly to today’s dependency on tech.
And guess what, “Grid”, is a modern-day banger delivered by middle-aged stars Chuck D, Flavor Flav, and feat. Cypress Hill and the before mentioned inspiration George Clinton. And in a time when kids (and older folk) are, again, starting to be sequestered in their homes and social media and news outlets are sowing the seeds of hate and disinformation….anxieties are at an all-time high. And this much-needed track asks the question of what would happen if it all went away.
I played the single and asked my young ones what they would do if the internet went away and their answer was poignant. They declared that I would have the biggest withdraw…TouchĂ©.
