Blvck Hippie has proven there is no specific crate to slot their style into. And as their new release “Basketball Camp” (June 14, 2024, via The Record Machine) is on the horizon, let’s go back to the hallowed year of 2019 and BH’s phenomenal self-titled EP and revisit the sock hop era track “Hotel Lobby”.

Vocalist Josh Shaw croons tender as his band plays a smooth early 1960s AM radio soundtrack for this throwback Lover’s Lane beauty. Chapter one of this sentimental journey with a few twists along the way, goes, “I was waiting on the elevator/ I saw your face as the doors closed/ Simple face, tear-stained eyes, pale cheeks/ Leaving everything exposed/ I know the ones who hurt you, by the feelings you hide/ Leave your baggage in the lobby, you always take it inside—“. Oooh, what a scene setter Shaw laments. As I said, it’s just the beginning of this story of torment—and, love?

As you wait for the hotly anticipated release of Blvck Hippie’s new album and have a first stream of their new single “Streetlights“, take a step back in time and check out the hidden-in-plain-site gem “Hotel Lobby”, here at the GTC.
