Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra Thoughts & Tour (NSFW)

‘Theatre Is Evil’
OUT NOW

By Walter Price

Over the years I have considered myself some sort of passive fan of The Dresden Dolls. I have only owned their 2003 self-titled charmer and have been to a handful of mostly entertaining shows.

I sort of found that I wasn’t fully getting the message or drinking enough of the media Kool-Aid to be a die-hard follower of what was The Dresden Dolls.

That could explain why it has taken me so long to listen to Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra’s 2012 release Theatre Is Evil. I can say that I have been missing out.

Famously a product of crowd-funding, Theatre Is Evil is one of the better albums I’ve had a chance to lay ear on. Some of the most in-depth and craftily written rock/pop songs of the past several years can be found within the walls of this gem of an album. Verses set to a good dose of throw-back synth compositions you’ll have the pleasure of discovering anytime soon. I like that, I like that a lot.

Standout tracks “Want It Back”, “Bottomfeeder”, “The Killing Type” & “Do It With A Rockstar” find me a happy man.Yet, I won’t lie and say that I have deciphered all of the underlying messages Palmer is putting forth. I just really love the sound and compositions here. I Dig It!

What I also enjoy is that the album is almost gimmick-free. Something you don’t necessarily have to get all super-artsy-fartsy in thought to get into. An album I’d like to see performed live. I don’t know what happened to Amanda Palmer, if anything, in making this album but I think I am accidentally a new covert of what is “Amanda F-Ing Palmer”.

Hell, I may even invest in one of the super swell teapots she has for sale on her website…

“It’s up to public to define. My number-one goal is to never feel like I’m strictly defining myself. The minute I feel like I’m doing that as anything — as theatrical, as feminist, as songwriter — I feel like the minute I name it, I’m stuck in a box. I want to make shit up as I go along, and then everyone else can go calling it something.” Amanda Palmer (Zack Rosen interview huffingtonpost.com)

Oh, you can go to Amanda’s website and pay what you want for Theatre Is Evil. Don’t be cheap, she has to eat…
