A Norwegian Three-Way: A-Ha – “Take On Me” (Hunting High and Low 1985)
A-Ha – “Take On Me” is available @ iTunes.
by Walter Price
Back in the fabled year of 1985, you were happy as could be jamming tunes from the base-model stereo of your Pontiac Sunbird. Killer tracks from Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Madonna, and Tina Turner floated your boat. But one song above all other songs really got you then, that track was a sweet mix of synth-pop, acoustic magic, and hints of New Romantic and New Wave. A-Ha’s “Take On Me” had it all, but most of all, it had you!
But you were not the only one. No, it had me as well. And that Steve Barron directed video was so ahead of its time. Animation and live-action telling this hit’s emotions in tactile perfections…The ’80s were pure sonic bliss and this song played an evergreen part.
And it has been covered, many a time. Some efforts, need a bit of work and then there are a few that do it beautiful justice. Have a look at what I consider to be the best of the best odes to a classic that soundtracked your youth.
