Selig
By C. Price
I haven’t had Selig on my radar at all when I was looking through some new German music tonight. One reason might have been that they had announced their break-up in 1999. What I didn’t realize was that the band got back together in 2008 and since then released 3 albums. The latest one called “Magma” in February of this year. And with that they went back to their roots of being grungy and dark. Selig used to call their style Hippie-Metal and that is exactly what they are still doing very well.
“Magma” was recorded in England in 2012 and for the first time since their reunion they’ve been working with a producer. Steve Powers was the lucky one. He also produced albums for Blur and Robbie Williams, if that helps anyone. This summer the band is playing a few open air festivals in Germany at the end of August and lead singer Jan Plewka is continuing his solo tour in September/ November/ December singing songs by Simon & Garfunkel and German singer/ songwriter Rio Reiser. If you want to expand your musical knowledge start with Selig. Their album “Blender” from 1997 is one of the greatest known in German music.
