7 Songs to Soundtrack Your Lonely Valentine’s Day
7 Songs to Valentine’s Day drinking the loneliness away.
by Walter Price
Are you kicking a tin can down Lonely Street this Valentine’s Day? Do the self-absorbed people holding hands and nuzzling make you want to throw up? I feel ya, consensually and metaphorically of course… Anyhoo, I love a good sad song highlighting and exploring the realms of the dark days of flying solo. Yearning for that break in life when that special someone rides in and saves the day. But who am I kidding? Wallerfing in self-doubt and reveling in darkness is actually fun(ish).
As I pour a drink and try to prove my point, I’ve selected seven tracks to soundtrack your wine stained teeth and tear-streaked face kinda day.
Happy Valentine’s Day
Brandi Carlile – Party Of One
I don’t wanna be right anymore
Lord, I don’t wanna fight anymore
I’m not taking your side anymore
I am tired
I am not my own
And I am leaving
Oh, I am tired
And I’m coming home
The Smiths – How Soon Is Now?
There’s a club if you’d like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
Emma Swift – Woodland Street
I could just stay here
In this bar full of cheer
Chasing whiskey
With two dollar beer
But you’ve got a way
Making me think that won’t do
Jamey Johnson – That Lonesome Song
And it’s sad and its long
And can’t nobody sing along
It’s a southbound train
Its a whistle in the wind
Ain’t nobody there to care where I been
I’m humming on that lonesome song again
Oasis – Don’t Look Back In Anger
And so, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as she’s walking on by
My soul slides away
But don’t look back in anger
I heard you say
Hank Williams Sr. I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry
He sounds too blue to fly
That means he’s lost the will to live
I’m so lonesome I could cry
Did you ever see a night so slow
As time goes draggin’ by
The moon just went behind the clouds
The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I’m so lonesome I could cry…
Willie Nelson feat Sinéad O’Connor- Don`t Give Up
Though I saw it all around I never thought that I could be affected
I thought that we would be the last to go it is so strange the way things turn
Drove the night toward my home the place that I was born on the lakeside
And as daylight broke I saw the earth the trees had burned down to the ground
