In case you don’t know or fully understand (who does) the plight of whistleblower Julian Assange, here’s the Wiki summary of the WikiLeaks founder, “Julian Paul Assange (/əˈsɑːnʒ/ ⓘ ə-SAHNZH;[3] né Hawkins; born 3 July 1971) is an Australian editor, publisher, and activist who founded WikiLeaks in 2006. He came to international attention in 2010 after WikiLeaks published a series of leaks from Chelsea Manning, a United States Army intelligence analyst:[4] footage of a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad, U.S. military logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and U.S. diplomatic cables. Assange has won multiple awards for publishing and journalism.”
Ok, that’s surface fodder and possibly a stretch for the backstory for a pop tune. The depths of this historic scenario go deeper than any of us normies can ever imagine…But that didn’t stop Berliner indie icon (in the making) Kitty Solaris from writing a song praising the recently released freedom maverick (Which is strange to say. Shouldn’t truth be the mainstay in any society).
The track “Heroes” from her much-beloved LP “James Bond” is aptly titled and set to her sympathetic signature underground pop sound. Yet, blankly calling anyone a “Hero” is subjective if not sincerely problematic. But the sentiment here is truth and the agonizing political machines trying to curtail it are real. So, weird. But, again, Solaris swings, hits, wins…once again—all in the name of bettering society.
Solaris sings, “he´s dangerous man/ for a world that pretends/ to be free – a wannabe/ he´s dangerous man/ for a world that pretends/ to be free – a wannabe…”. Hmm. For an artist that’s on a slow burn accent to stardom, Kitty certainly takes subtle but profound pop moves and I celebrate them all.
You can stream the thought-provoking “Heroes” here at the GTC.

“Kitty Solaris is a well-known Berlin singer/songwriter following the footsteps of her all-time favorites Velvet Underground, Patty Smith, and Catpower. In her kitchen in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, she developed her very unique style, playing meditative, mellow, and melancholic songs on her electric guitar accompanied by her tender voice. Always straight to the point with headlines and catchy hooklines.” – bio
