IV AND THE STRANGE BAND Hang Dog (single)
IV And The Strange Band Hang Dog is available on BCR Media, Apple Music, Deezer
by Walter Price
From IV And The Strange Band’s love letter to Coleman Williams’ four-legged soulmate LP ‘Hang Dog’ comes the poetically heartfelt single/short film for the title track. Told through Williams’ raw and slightly fluttered voice, the storyteller sings, “Hang dog hang dog gallows again/ Long ears four paws watching my end/ They’re saying I burnt up this town, while fleeing them badge wearing clowns./ How could I not stand my ground to their sins./ I’m born to sink never swim./ I’ll kick that gate until I get in.”
What does it all mean? The way I hear it is no matter how hard you try, forces are fighting against you. But at the end of the day and in the middle of it all the turmoil your confidant remains man’s never wavering best friend.
The short film for the single is, well, a bit surreal and certainly one that’ll hang in your noggin for a while. Directed by Jace Kartye, your eyes will follow a day in the life of an ol’ hound dog. Early morning cold beer and a bone, then the ill-fated mailman shows up to the house and the recurring pursuit begins. The symbolism could be open to interpretation, but if follow the lyrics, the message becomes pretty clear.
