The recent EP, ‘Garden Songs’, from Toronto singer-songwriter His His [Aidan Belo] is a sparse beauty dedicated to a yearning to go home. Heavy on the sentimental that will find fans of Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, and The War on Drugs becoming instant devotees. Belo, in a quote, provided to the GTC, shares, “Garden Songs, centres around Saudade – the Portuguese word for melancholy, longing, and sadness. It signifies a return home to my family’s farm from life in the city.”
The 7-track album is full of delicate guitar, soft and breezy vocals, and so much emotional earnestness it, in this near post-pandemic world, may just cause a tear, or two. In another heartfelt quote, the songwriter adds more introspective weight to the EP, “Spending time at home with my family, friends, working on the property, and missing loved ones, are all what inspired Garden Songs. I hope you enjoy these different narratives, either from my perspective or that of a family member.”
