Just imagine that vibe, the sound you’d get if you took that guitar the Pixies borrowed from Roy Orbison and Dick Dale, bits of that snarky, yet often correct, social commentary Chuck Prophit and Jello Biafra preach and write a song about the haves-more pushing the haves-less out of the use of planet’s natural beauty and resources?

Well, you need not imagine any longer, Missoula’s Catnyp has a recent single, “Big Sky”, and it is these things. And the weighty message is an important zeitgeist matter that needs to be faced head-on. As the following lyrics talk about the oblivious moneyed folk taking over the great outdoors and leaving the rest of us behind and forced to peak over fences, all in the name of personal growth(?)…

I’ve got a trust fund, and you ain’t got one
Don’t let that stop me from holding court, Old Sport!

So what do the deer and antelope say?

I’ll put a fence up, then drive the rents up
So they can dream of the Flathead shore no more
I’ll re-read Chekov, dust Dostoyevsk-off
Looks like time for a new Oligarchy to me

I’m going to Big Sky and ma ma ma ma mama I cannot lie
It’s not enough like California or the streets down in Sedona
So I’m really gonna have to try…

Can nature be gentrified? Can access be denied? If we don’t speak up, the answer is a resounding, yes. And this single starts an inevitable conversation. And lest we forget the hallowed words of Woody Guthrie, “This land is your land and this land is my land, From California to the New York island, From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters, This land was made for you and me…”

You can stream “Big Sky” as well as Catnyp’s Top Spotify Tracks, now at the GTC.

It was scary staring at a blank screen with a cup of coffee, trying to write lyrics to so many instrumentals in such a short amount of time. It definitely gave the album a certain cohesiveness that might not be there if everything had been written and recorded in a more typically organic manner. It also allowed for some fearless experimentation in vocal styles.” – Henderson K Shatner
