Over the past few months and after countless spins of Eamonn Dowd & The Racketeers’ potent Songs From The Fever Ship LP, I’ve wrestled with the proper way of reviewing this unsung hero of storytelling. It’s part gothic rock opera, part dream-states, heavy doses of heady tales of what once was is no more.

Teaming up, once again, with drummer/writer Eamon Carr (Horslips), Eamonn Dowd utilizes his unique and well-traveled voice and indelible guitar licks to relay the messages of these 11 vignettes. I’ve moved back and forth on whether these tales are being told from the perspective of a dying man recounting his histories, or maybe a landbound mind recalling fabled stories of the sea, and, at times, I’ve also considered that these songs are here to etch the treacherous realities of life, love, hope and loss meandering throughout our lives. All seemingly important, but near nothing in the vast timelessness of the choppy sea.

You’ll have to experience and decipher this album for yourself. Yet, one thing is certain, you will not hear anything like in the foreseeable future…

You can stream Songs From The Fever Ship in full on Bandcamp.
