by Walter Price
Molly Parden’s natural ability for melody finds her joining forces with producer/composer Hollow Hum [Charlie Lowell] on the beautiful 7-track covers EP, ‘Why Worry: A Collection of Covers’.
The set features the duo putting their unvarnished takes on hallowed tunes from R.E.M., Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, Nancy Adams, Crowded House, Sarah White, and Gin Blossoms. And it the later that kicks the set off in brilliant fashion.
Why Worry: A Collection of Covers
Found Out About You (Gin Blossoms)
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)
Fall At Your Feet (Crowded House)
Sweetheart (Sarah White Music)
Love (Nancy Adams)
Losing My Religion (R.E.M.)
Why Worry (Dire Straits)
“Found Out About You” originates from the Gin Blossoms’ seminal 1992 album ‘New Miserable Experience’. An album steeped in alt-rock success and tragedy folklore. With enough sing-along radio hits and killer deep-cuts to make it one of the band’s most beloved releases, and a rock staple that continues to soundtrack endless carefree summers.
The original song, written by the late Doug Hopkins, is said to be dually inspired by variations of discovery. Set to that unforgettable post-punk jangle, airy arrangement, and those haunting folk harmonies.
The track maintains its shadowy weight and charm in the Parden/Lowel redux. With a newer, heightened mystique, powered by Parden’s vocal agility. This version’s vibe is dreamy with subtle distraught undertones. Akin to one of those misleading childhood lullabies. The surface beauty masking something more daunting, secrets. All in compelling layers that are undeniably striking.
Take the addictive “Found Out About You” for a spin and add it to your summer/weekend playlists…we have, the GTC WKND SPIN.
